Year 3 Residential Trip

On Monday, the Year Three children from across the Federation headed out to Escot for their residential.

On arrival, they found their yurts and quickly made themselves at home. After a briefing from the instructors and a picnic lunch, they were put into mixed school groups and headed out into the park to solve a treasure hunt. This was a great chance for the children to begin working as a team and discover the many aspects of Escot. They found many of the clues but I have to admit, we were greatly distracted by drop slides, pirate boats, otters and lynxes.

It was then time for more energetic team games: solving problems to cross an imaginary river; transporting team members using only a board and rollers, and finally a game moving water from a tub to a tube filled with holes. This proved extremely popular and cooled us down in the strong sunshine.

After a drop slide and maze visit, it was dinner time and half the group helped serve a delicious spaghetti Bolognese. They also got to wash up- a surprisingly popular activity. Photographic evidence is available if you don’t believe me! We finished the first day with a night hike to see beavers followed by a camp fire and marshmallows.

The next day, after a tasty breakfast, the children split into different groups and spent the morning building some amazing shelters and learning how to start fires in order to survive. Every group managed to get their fire going but not all the shelters passed the waterproof test!

The final activity was the most anticipated and proved to be the most popular- the swamp walk. Every child completed the whole course and slipped, slid and swam their way to the end. This was easy for many of the children but plenty found it difficult yet refused to give up- a fantastic attitude to have. This, along with their behaviour, was praised by the instructors.

In all, a wonderful residential with a great deal of fun, and every child eager to participate and happy to mingle with their Federation peers.
