Flexi Schooling
Flexi-schooling is an arrangement in which a child remains registered at school but receives part of their education at home. It is different from full-time elective home education and must be agreed by the school.
At Brampford Speke, we recognise that flexi-schooling can be a positive and enriching experience for some children and families. Our agreed flexi-schooling model enables approved pupils to learn at home on Fridays and attend school from Monday to Thursday. Children remain fully part of our school community and continue to access our broad and ambitious curriculum alongside their peers.
We believe that successful flexi-schooling depends upon a strong partnership between families and the school. Parents are responsible for providing a suitable and purposeful education on the agreed home-learning day, with opportunities to build on children’s interests and extend their learning beyond the classroom.
Each application is considered individually, taking account of the child’s educational progress, wellbeing, attendance and access to the curriculum. All arrangements are subject to an application and approval process, a written agreement and regular review to ensure that flexi-schooling continues to support the child’s needs and education.
How flexi-schooling works at Brampford Speke
Approved flexi-schooled pupils attend school from Monday to Thursday and receive their education at home on Fridays. This consistent model helps us to protect curriculum continuity, plan effectively and ensure that pupils remain connected to their class and school community.
Who can apply?
Parents and carers of children registered at Brampford Speke may apply for flexi-schooling. Each application is considered individually by the Exe Valley Federation's Flexi Schooling Panel; submitting an application does not guarantee that it will be approved.
When considering an application, the panel will take account of:
- the individual needs and best interests of the child;
- attendance and punctuality;
- educational progress and access to the curriculum;
- any safeguarding or wellbeing considerations;
- the proposed education to be provided at home;
- the family’s ability to work in partnership with the school; and
- the impact of the arrangement on the efficient education of all pupils.
Learning at home
Parents and carers are responsible for ensuring that their child receives a suitable and purposeful education on the agreed home-learning day. Friday should be treated as an educational day rather than a day off school.
Home education may include practical, creative, cultural or outdoor learning, as well as opportunities to practise and extend knowledge and skills developed in school. Families will be asked to provide information about the education their child receives at home as part of the application and review process.
Working in partnership
Successful flexi-schooling relies upon open and consistent communication between home and school. Families are expected to:
- support regular attendance from Monday to Thursday;
- maintain communication with the school;
- ensure that agreed home education is provided each Friday;
- share information about their child’s home learning when requested; and
- attend review meetings.
Application and review process
Families interested in flexi-schooling should read the school’s Flexi-schooling Policy before completing an application form.
Applications are considered by a federation panel and take account of the information provided by the family, alongside the child’s attendance, progress, wellbeing and individual circumstances. Where an arrangement is approved, parents and carers will be asked to sign a written agreement.
Arrangements are approved for a defined period and reviewed regularly. Approval may be amended or withdrawn if the arrangement is no longer supporting the child’s education or wellbeing, if the terms of the agreement are not being met, or if circumstances change.
